Done for you · New York · Federal + State
Your taxes, handled.
Signed by a
real preparer.
Send us your documents and we prepare your federal and New York return, computed to the dollar. A registered preparer reviews and signs every return before it reaches the IRS. You approve. We file.
// Authorized IRS e-file · 1040 + IT-201 · filing year-round in New York
// How it works
Three steps. We do the rest.
No software to learn and no forms to wrestle with. You send your documents; we handle everything from there.
Send your documents
Upload them, snap a photo, or forward the emails. W-2s, 1099s, last year's return. That is all we need to start.
We prepare and review
We build your federal and New York return and a registered preparer checks every line. Nothing is rubber-stamped.
You approve, we file
You get a plain summary to approve, then we transmit straight to the IRS and track your refund to your account.
// Find your situation
What does your return actually cost?
Pick the one that sounds like you. No form, no email, no waiting on a callback to find out the price.
You have one job and a standard deduction.
The most common return in New York, and the one most people overpay someone else to do. Students and first time filers land here too.
- Federal 1040 and New York IT-201, both included
- W-2 income, single or head of household
- Standard deduction, and we check whether itemizing beats it
- New York credits most filers miss, including the college tuition credit
What to send
- Your W-2
- Photo ID and last year's return, if you have it
Nothing here adds complexity, so this is the base tier. Both returns included, no e-file fee, no charge for your copy.

Kids, a spouse, and a few more documents.
Filing jointly with dependents is where the credits get valuable and where self-filed returns most often leave money behind.
- Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit, federal and New York
- Child and Dependent Care Credit, plus the New York version
- Joint or separate, and we compare which one costs you less
- Several W-2s and 1099s across both spouses
- Also covers a move between states, or two states in one year
What to send
- Every W-2 and 1099 for both spouses
- Dependents' names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers
- Childcare provider totals, if you paid for care
Priced up for dependents, a joint return and several income documents. A single filer with dependents and one W-2 often still lands at $49.

You got 1099s instead of a W-2.
Contractors, gig work, delivery, rideshare, consulting. The return is more work and the deductions are where it pays off, so this is the tier where a preparer earns the fee.
- Schedule C, with an expense and deduction review line by line
- Self-employment tax, and the deduction for half of it
- Home office, mileage, phone, equipment and software
- Qualified Business Income deduction where you qualify
- What to set aside in quarterly estimates for next year
What to send
- Every 1099-NEC and 1099-K
- A total for your expenses, however rough. We will sort the categories
- Mileage, if you drove for work
One 1099 and clean records is $89. Several income documents, or a registered business, moves it to $149.

You own property or run a business.
The most involved individual returns we prepare, and the ones where an error is most expensive. Everything gets checked twice before it goes anywhere.
- Schedule E for rental income, with depreciation set up correctly
- Repairs against improvements, which is where most self-filed returns go wrong
- Schedule C for the business, with the full expense review
- New York and New York City treatment, which differ from federal
- Multi-state allocation if the property is outside New York
What to send
- Rent received, and what you spent on the property
- Closing statement if you bought or sold during the year
- Mortgage interest (1098) and property tax paid
Rental property or a business puts you here. Still flat, still both returns included, still quoted before we start.

You missed a year. Or a few.
This is a large part of what we do, and it is less frightening than it feels. Filing late is almost always better than not filing: the penalty for failing to file is far steeper than the penalty for failing to pay, and it stops growing the moment the return is in.
- Each missed year prepared and filed, oldest first
- We pull your IRS wage and income transcripts, so lost W-2s are not a problem
- Refunds are still claimable for three years back. Older years may still be worth filing
- If you owe, we lay out the installment agreement options before anything is filed
- New York back returns handled alongside the federal ones
What to send
- Which years you think you missed. An approximate answer is fine
- Any IRS or New York notices you have received
Each year is its own return at its own tier, so a three year catch up is three returns. A plain prior year W-2 return is $49.

// Why Margin
The accuracy of a machine.
The judgment of a person.
We pair careful software with a real preparer, so your return is faster than a traditional office and more thorough than filing it yourself.
Every number is checked twice.
Once by software that does not get tired, and once by a person who knows what a New York return should look like. That is where errors get caught: before they become an IRS notice, a delayed refund, or a credit you never knew you qualified for.
To e-file, and for a copy of your return. New York prohibits charging for state e-file, and we do not charge for federal either.
You see everything
A plain summary of your entire return before anything is sent. No black box, no jargon, no surprises at the end.
Nothing gets missed
We claim every credit and deduction you qualify for, including the New York ones most filers overlook.
// A registered preparer, not a robot
A real person signs your return. Always.
Automation does the heavy lifting, but it never files on its own. By law, the preparer of record reviews and personally stands behind every return. We make that review fast for simple returns and thorough for the ones that need it. The human is never removed.
No preparer signature, no filing. That is a promise, not a setting.
What your preparer verifies on every return
- ✓ Your identity and filing status
- ✓ Every dependent and who claims them
- ✓ All income accounted for
- ✓ Deductions supported by documents
- ✓ Every credit you qualify for
- ✓ The math, end to end
// Your preparer
You work with a person, not a portal.
The same registered preparer prepares, reviews, and signs your return, and is the one you reach when you have a question.
Your dedicated preparer of record
Mohammed Usama, owner of Talcoe LLC, based in Queens. Registered with the IRS as a paid preparer and with New York State, an Authorized IRS e-file Provider, and accountable for your return under Treasury Circular 230. Your return is prepared, reviewed and signed by the same person, by name, and that name is on file with both the IRS and New York State. Scope, prices and everything else you are entitled to know before hiring a preparer is posted in our disclosures.

The Margin guarantee
If we make an error on a return we prepared, we fix it and cover the penalty our error caused. If your return is ever examined, you get your complete file the same day, the workpapers behind every figure, a plain explanation of how the return was built, and an introduction to an enrolled agent or tax attorney who handles the representation. You are never left holding a return you cannot account for.
// Security
Your documents stay private.
Your tax documents hold your most sensitive information. We treat them that way, with security aligned to IRS Publication 4557.
Encrypted in transit and at rest
Documents you send are encrypted on the way to us and encrypted where they are stored. Nothing sensitive travels by plain email or text.
Your data is never sold
We use your information for one thing: preparing your return. It is never shared or sold, and your SSN stays protected.
A record you can get back
Returns and supporting documents are kept encrypted for three years, the period set by our written retention schedule, then securely destroyed. Details in our privacy policy.
// Questions
The things people actually ask.
Straight answers, before you hand over a single document.
Do I have to come into an office?
No. Everything happens remotely: you send your documents, we prepare the return, you review it and approve it, and we e-file. If you would rather talk it through, you get a real preparer on the phone, not a queue.
Are you a CPA?
We are a registered tax return preparer, which is the credential the law requires to prepare and sign returns for pay: an IRS PTIN (P03478913), a New York State registration (NYTPRIN 13367328), and status as an Authorized IRS e-file Provider. It puts your preparer on the hook for your return under Treasury Circular 230, personally and by name.
Where that differs from a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney is representation. Those three can argue a case before the IRS; a registered preparer prepares, signs and files. If your situation looks like it needs representation, we will say so up front rather than after you have paid us.
What happens if my return gets examined?
We give you your complete file and the workpapers supporting every figure on the return, we explain in plain language how it was prepared, and we answer your questions about it. We then refer you to an enrolled agent, CPA, or tax attorney who can represent you. We do not represent clients in audits or examinations, and no preparer who is honest with you will promise a refund or promise you will never be audited.
How much does it cost, exactly?
$49, $89, or $149, flat, depending on what is in your return. The tier is set by your situation, not by the size of your refund, and never by the hour. Multiple years are one tier per year, so a three year catch up is three returns.
You get the price in writing before any work starts. If your return turns out to be more involved than what you described, we tell you the new price and you decide. Our full posted price list is at margin.nyc/disclosures.
Do you charge extra to file my New York return?
No. Your New York State return is included in the price of your federal return, and there is no separate e-file fee. New York prohibits charging one, and we would not anyway. A copy of your filed return is free too.
Can you file years I never filed?
Yes. Back returns are a large part of what we do, and filing late is almost always better than not filing: penalties for failing to file are steeper than penalties for failing to pay, and they stop growing once the return is in. Each year is priced at its own tier.
What if I owe instead of getting a refund?
We tell you the number before anything is filed, and we walk you through the options: pay in full, an IRS installment agreement, or an extension of time to pay. We will not quietly file something that surprises you. Our fee is the same either way, because it is never based on your refund.
How do I send documents without emailing my SSN?
You do not email it. Social Security numbers, dates of birth, bank details, and photos of your ID come through an encrypted channel only, never by email, text, or a plain web form. If anyone claiming to be us asks for those by email, it is not us. See our privacy policy for exactly what we collect, how long we keep it, and the legal limits on what we can do with it.
What if you make a mistake?
We fix the return and we cover the penalty our error caused. You will also see the completed return, including any bank account information on it, and have the chance to ask questions before you sign anything. We will never ask you to sign a blank or incomplete return.
