Privacy Policy

Margin is a trade name of Talcoe LLC, an independent tax preparation service operating in New York. We are not affiliated with the Internal Revenue Service or the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Our registration, price list, and required consumer disclosures are posted at margin.nyc/disclosures. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We treat your tax information with the safeguards required of a financial institution under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and IRS Publication 4557, and we maintain a signed written information security plan (WISP) as required of paid tax preparers under the FTC Safeguards Rule (16 CFR Part 314) and the New York SHIELD Act.

Information we collect, and what we don't

We collect only what we need at each step:

How we use your information

We use your information to respond to your request, prepare and file your tax return, and communicate with you about that work. We do not sell your information. We do not use it for unrelated advertising. We share it only as needed to file your return with tax authorities, with service providers bound by confidentiality who help us operate (such as our email provider and secure document portal), or where required by law.

Text messaging (SMS)

If you give your mobile number and check the text-message consent box, we may send you text messages about your quote and return. Consent to receive texts is not a condition of any purchase. Message frequency varies and message and data rates may apply. You can opt out at any time by replying STOP, and reply HELP for help.

We do not share or sell mobile information or SMS opt-in consent with third parties or affiliates for their marketing purposes. Your phone number and the consent you give are used only by Margin to contact you about your tax service.

Email

We send transactional messages (quote, status, document requests) related to your request, and, if you opted in, occasional updates. Every non-transactional email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time.

Leads from advertising

If you reach us through an advertisement (for example a lead form on Facebook or Instagram), the platform shares the contact details and any consent you provided so a preparer can follow up with your quote. We record the consent language you were shown and when you agreed to it. You can ask us to delete your information at any time.

How we protect your information

Information is encrypted in transit and at rest. Documents you upload move directly from your browser into encrypted storage, so they never sit on our web server and never travel by email. Access is limited to the preparer working on your return. Multi-factor authentication is enabled on every system that holds client information, devices are encrypted, and we select service providers on their ability to safeguard your data and limit them to what the work requires. These controls are documented in our written information security plan, which we review at least annually.

Use and disclosure of your tax return information

Internal Revenue Code section 7216 limits what a preparer may do with your return information. We will not use or disclose your tax return information for any purpose other than preparing and filing your return without your separate written consent. We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing.

How long we keep it

When a retention period ends, records are securely deleted or shredded. We do not keep your information longer than we have a legal or business reason to.

If there is ever a security incident

If your private information is ever acquired without authorization, we will notify you without unreasonable delay, and we will notify the New York Attorney General, the New York Department of State Division of Consumer Protection, the New York State Police, and the Internal Revenue Service as New York and federal rules require. Our notice will tell you what happened, what information was involved, and what to do next, including how to file IRS Form 14039 and place a credit freeze.
